Subaru Vehicle Service: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need an appointment for my routine Subaru maintenance?

Goldstein Subaru does have an Express Lane for some services, such as an oil change, NYS Inspection, light bulb replacement or tire rotation. Our Express Lane does not require an appointment for these quick services. However, for your 5K, 15K, 30K and 60K services, we do require an appointment, which you can schedule easily online now. We will contact you to confirm your online appointment. Or call us now at 518-869-1250. Not sure if your desired service can be done in our Express Lane? Call us and ask!

What do I do for transportation while my Subaru is in for service?

Goldstein Subaru is proud to offer FREE LOANER vehicles! If you would like a loaner vehicle while yours is in for service, please request one when you schedule your appointment with us.

How long will my Subaru be in service?

Our Subaru experts work efficiently to get you back on the road as quickly as possible. Should you wish to wait for your vehicle, please take advantage of our waiting area. We have a big screen television, and free fresh coffee or tea. Sit back in our comfy chairs and enjoy your time with us! Goldstein Subaru is also pet-friendly, so feel free to bring your well-behaved furry friend with you.

Why do I need to get my oil changed so frequently?

The best protection for your Subaru boxer engine is an oil change. By getting your oil changed, it will prevent excess wear on engine parts and it will run cooler. If you don't change your oil as frequently as suggested, it will cause engine damage. Goldstein Subaru recommendeds an oil change at no more than 5,000 miles or no longer than 6 months between changes. Depending on your driving habits, or heavy usage, your vehicle may benefit from more frequent oil changes. Routine oil changes will help to maximize engine reliability so if you're looking to keep your car for a long time, make sure to keep changing the oil.

Why is my tire pressure light on?

Don't ignore the tire pressue warning light. You should know the required tire pressure for your tires. Proper tire pressure leads to a more comfortable ride and your tires will wear evenly. By continuing to drive on your low pressure tires, you will cause excess tire wear and tear, your vehicle may not handle properly and you might end up having to replace your suspension. Ask your Goldstein Subaru Service Advisor what your tire pressue should be. Keep a tire gauge handy in the glove compartment and fill as needed at your local gas station or Stewart's Shop.

Why is my check engine light on? Why is my check engine light blinking?

If the Check Engine Light is flashing, you need to stop driving and have your car towed to a service center like Goldstein Subaru. If the light is steady, not blinking, there are a variety of issues that can cause this. Sometimes, it's just a matter of tightening your gas cap. If this doesn't make the light turn off, then you should contact the Goldstein Subaru Service Department for an appointment. We will be happy to diagnose the issue and fix it quickly.

What is the point of getting my tires rotated and balanced?

Tire Rotation and Balancing allows your tires to last longer because they wear evenly and create a smoother ride. Without rotating and balancing, you will most likely need to replace your tires much more frequently. Riding on unbalanced tires can be uncomfortable, make it unsafe to drive and you may end up needing to replace suspension parts. Tires should be rotated and balanced as frequently as every 8,000 miles. Better yet - have those tires rotated with every oil change. Ask your Goldstein Subaru Service Advisor what is right for your particular vehicle.

Why should I get my transmission serviced?

A transmission service will remove contaminated fluid, thus providing proper lubrication of internal equipment. This results in more efficient and smoother shifting, therefore a more comfortable ride. A transmission service is a smart decision as it removes contaminates that could result in costly repairs later. Goldstein Subaru proudly uses BG Products as part of the transmission service.

Air conditioning not cool enough? Why does my a/c stink?

During our Albany summers, you want to feel cool and comfortable during the drive to Lake George or to shop Warren Street in Hudson. Proper maintenance of your air conditioning system helps it keeps its cool when needed. Smell something stinky? That could be mold or other contaminates in your air conditioning, and that blows right into your face. You don't want to roll down the windows while the a/c is on, right? Goldstein Subaru can clean your air conditioning with BG Products and keep it smelling great.

Why should I get my coolant system serviced?

Coolant, or antifreeze, should be replaced and the hoses and lines should be cleaned to help ensure proper coolant temperature by removing contaminants. Recommended service intervals will keep lines and hoses in proper working order, and keep your engine from overheating. Again, Goldstein Subaru uses BG Products to flush your coolant system. Find out more about all BG Products services on our BG Products video page.

When should I replace my air filter?

If you’re noticing a decrease in gas mileage, you should consider getting your air filter replaced. A dirty air filter can also cause damage to spark plugs and create stress on the engine which will cause a decrease in performance. If you continue to drive with the dirty air filter, there will be increased engine contamination as well as the start of engine failure. We recommend replacing it every 15,000 miles. You may need to replace it more often with your specific driving habits.

My car is making weird noises?

Squeak and rattles coming from your car can simply mean you just need a lube job. Lubricating the base frame of a vehicle will reduce friction on any parts that are close enough to touch. The Service experts at Goldstein Subaru know exactly where to add a dab or squeeze of proper lubrication products to your vehicle. Don't do this yourself.

My battery seems weak. Is it the battery or something else?

If your Subaru is having trouble starting, especially in colder weather, you may just need a simple battery replacement. But, if your battery is relatively new, there could be something else happening. Our team can test the battery and related connections to check for issues that keeps your Subaru from starting and running its best. Yes, you can replace a battery yourself, and we'd be glad to provide you with one, but wouldn't it be best to make sure its done properly and have your vehicle checked at the same time? Check our Service Coupons page for available Free Battery Tests or other services you may need.
